Welcome to Mountain Melodies: Native Flute Masterclass, an immersive journey comprised of a full-day flute masterclass, a flute circle, a concert, and an optional two-day flute-making masterclass.


Throughout this immersive journey, you'll have the unique opportunity to refine your flute-playing skills under the expert guidance of Jonny Lipford. Additionally, you may delve into the fine art of flute making with David Webb of Dakota Windsong Flutes.

We've curated a series of enriching activities designed to inspire and develop your musical talents. You'll engage in intensive sessions focused on honing your signature sound, integrating technique, and finding harmony when sharing music, all while receiving invaluable feedback on your progress.


Toward the end of the masterclass, you'll have the chance to share your creations and thoughts with fellow participants.

On Sunday, we'll all gather for a magical flute circle that will surely make the hills come alive with the sound of music.

Sunday will conclude with a concert featuring your instructors: Jonny Lipford and David Webb.

The workshops starts with an engaging flute construction overview, leading into selecting wood and preparing the flute blank. Participants will then layout, router, and chisel the core components before sealing the interior to preserve the wood.

The focus is on assembling the flute by gluing and clamping the halves together, followed by a thorough cleanup of any excess glue. The session concludes with setting the flute aside to dry, preparing for the next day's activities.

The day begins with unclamping the flute halves and moving on to drilling the blow hole and voicing the flute to the Key of Am. The morning's efforts center on fine-tuning the instrument’s internal structure through lathing and detailed shaping.

Continue your flute building, which includes drilling, tuning, and applying finishing touches. This phase sees the flute being sealed for durability, polished for beauty, and fitted with deer hide ties, culminating in a fully functional and aesthetically pleasing handmade flute.

Saturday August 3:

This is your gateway to mastering the flute and developing a personal musical style. Under Jonny's guidance, you'll explore the nuances of advanced phrasing, master the art of playing with purpose, and learn how to seamlessly integrate emotion. Conducted in an encouraging small-group atmosphere, this is a remarkable opportunity to enhance your musical abilities and discover your unique sound.

Our morning hours will be focused on technical mastery and style development. We'll explore the intricacies of phrasing and correct breathing techniques, all aimed at elevating your flute playing prowess and helping you establish your personal style.
