About This Instructor:
Hovia Edwards, an evocative Native American flute player and composer, hails from the
Fort Hall Indian Reservation in Idaho, where her rich cultural heritage is woven from the
threads of the Okanagan-Similkameen band of Keremeos, British Columbia, the
Shoshone tribe of Fort Hall, and the Navajo Nation of Red Mesa, Arizona. Her name,
“Hovia” (Who-vee-ah), translates to “song” or “music”; in Shoshone, embodying the very
essence of her life’s work and passion.
From a young age, Hovia was captivated by music, particularly the enchanting melodies
of the Native American flute. At just 15 years old, she released her debut album,
Morning Star, which garnered a Grammy Award nomination in the Traditional Folk
Album category. In 2002, she had the honor of representing the Goshute Tribe of Utah during the opening ceremonies of the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, a moment that showcased Indigenous culture on a global Platform.
Hovia’s recent work in opera demonstrates her commitment to storytelling through Music. Throughout her journey, Hovia remains committed to honoring those who have guided
and mentored her. With each note she plays, she not only entertains but also educates,
fostering a deeper understanding of Native American culture and its musical traditions.
As a bridge between past and present, Hovia Edwards invites listeners to experience the beauty and depth of Indigenous music and storytelling. Her journey is a testament to the transformative power of music, creating connections across cultures and generations, and leaving an indelible mark on the cultural landscape.
